Our Kelowna dental office provides both in-office and take-home teeth whitening options to help lighten the colour of your natural teeth.
What is Teeth Whitening?
Teeth whitening uses bleaching agents that are peroxide-based and designed to make the colour of your teeth lighter. Oxygen acts on the tooth enamel as the active ingredient breaks down, creating the whitening effect.
Teeth Whitening Procedures
At Dr. Steve Johnson Dental Group, we offer two treatment options to whiten your teeth. Your dentist can help you decide which option is best for you.
- In-Office Treatment
We provide professional bleaching treatments at our dental office. This treatment generally takes place in one appointment where your dentist will apply the whitening solution directly onto your teeth and then activate it using a dental laser.
- Take-Home Treatment
Our take-home treatment generally requires two appointments. At the first appointment, your dentist will create a custom mold for your teeth and at the second appointment, they will check that the mold fits properly and make adjustments if needed. Then you're all set to whiten your teeth from the comfort of your home.
Reasons For Teeth Whitening
If you are bothered by darkened or stained teeth, the whitening process can be a way to lighten their natural colour in a non-intrusive manner. Although it will usually not entirely restore the colour of your teeth, it may help to lighten them.
A number of factors can increase surface stains and darken the appearance of teeth, including:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth
- Normal wear of the outer layer of the tooth
- Fluorosis (excessive fluoridation during childhood)
- Stained teeth due to medications (e.g. tetracycline), lifestyle factors (e.g. smoking) and diet (e.g. consuming dark beverages such as coffee and tea)
